Southwest Church of Christ is a 1,000+ member church heated and cooled exclusively by 221 tons of Hydro-Temp ground source heat pumps. The system consists of twenty-four individual units--the largest of which is 40 tons, while the smallest consists of 2 tons. Two supply wells (each at an approximate depth of 200 feet and with a 5 horsepower pump) provide the units' water source and are staged so that only one is used at a time. The water is re-injected into the ground by means of two re-injection wells. Inside the main mechanical room of the Better Life Center is a 250 ton stainless steel plate and frame heat exchanger, to which all of the units in the facility are plumbed by high density polyethylene pipe and a 3 stage pumping station which circulates fluid from the plate heat exchanger to each of the units. The ground water accepts heat or gives up heat from the heat pumps through the plate and frame heat exchanger. The twenty-four unit thermostats are in a secure cabinet at a central location. Remote sensors located in each of the various zones throughout the building monitor each area's temperature. Each thermostat then operates on its own unique seven day program based on usage for its particular zone. The church's previous system was a gas boiler with fan coil units scattered throughout the building to provide heat. The cooling was provided by air coils connected to outside condensing units. With the new system, the larger units are staged to provide improved zone comfort and better electrical demand management. Because there is no outdoor mechanical equipment, maintenance cost for weather related damage and for vandalism has been drastically reduced.
