Hydro-Temp Demonstrates Features of Hydro-Temp Earth Coupled Heating and Cooling System.
This house is nestled in the rolling hills of central Arkansas. The house is two stories with 3,650 square feet: 2,650 on the main level and 1,000 square feet on the second level. There is a four ton three stage Hydro-Temp system installed that modulates in capacity based entirely on what the house needs. The unit will ramp up and down in capacity in the following stages: 1 1/2 ton (first stage), 2 1/2 ton (second stage), and 4 ton (third stage). The Hydro-Temp's unit has a microprocessor incorporated into it that interfaces with the four thermostats and zone control dampers located throughout the house. The homeowner, Mr. Hill on his own initiative, installed hour meters to measure the run time of each compressor. Also, his home weather station correlated outside and inside weather temperature and humidity. The meters showed the average run time in low speed was 88% of the time with the remaining time of 12% either in medium or high speed. The priority hot water on demand feature on his unit accounts for most of this remaining 12%. Having zone control and multiple staging enables the unit to load shift as is needed. The nice thing about the load shifting is that most of the zones usually do not call for heat or cooling at the same time. Since zones are smaller than the total home size they generally can be satisfied by first stage operation. The cycle times are long keeping the home at even temperatures throughout with low operation cost. In the summer an important benefit of long run times of the first stage is excellent latent heat removal (moisture or humidity) which adds a most desirable comfort level in the humid Arkansas climate.
